Giving to St. George through United Way

Here are answers to some common questions about giving to St. George through United Way. If you have other questions, please call the Church Office or contact a Parish Council Member.

Can I give to St. George through United Way?

Yes! Just designate St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral to receive all or a portion of your pledge to United Way.

How much of my United Way contribution directed to St. George will St. George actually receive?

United Way takes 10 percent of each pledge for its administrative costs. Therefore, if you pledge $1,000 to St. George through United Way, St. George will receive $900. If your contribution is applied to Stewardship, your Stewardship contribution will be the $900 received by St. George, not the full $1,000 pledged through United Way. As a result, you may have other reasons for giving through United Way, but please be aware that St. George receives more of your donation if you give directly to St. George.

How will my contribution to St. George through United Way be used?

As with any contribution to St. George, your contribution will be applied to your Stewardship, or to other programs, such as the Capital Fund, as you may direct. Just inform the Church office that you have made a donation through the United Way and let us know how you would like it to be applied.

How and when does St. George receive my contribution pledged through United Way?

St. George receives your contribution on the same basis as your payment is made to Untied Way. For example, if you contribute to United Way on a weekly basis, St. George will receive 90 percent of your weekly contribution, also on a weekly basis.

Stewardship

Stewardship Cards

God has given us everything we have. Above all He has entrusted to us the stewardship of His church. In the Church He gives us so many blessings, so much joy in His presence and in the company of our fellow believers, so much consolation when we mourn. But, in return, He asks us to make a sacrifice of ourselves to show out appreciation of these gifts. Love cannot exist without sacrifice. God Himself gave totally of Himself for our sake. If we truly love God, we can do nothing less than to make a total offering of ourselves to God.

This offering of us can take many forms. An important form is, of course, the offering of our money. Whatever we call it - dues, membership, and stewardship - it always comes down to a free offering of the material gifts which God has given us.

But the Church has need of many types of stewardship besides money. God has given everyone special gifts, many different gifts, for the up building of the Church. As you fill out this form, please be as generous as possible, not only with your treasure, but also with your time and talent.

What is Stewardship?

As Christians, we believe that God is the Giver of all good things. As stewards of God's gifts, we return to him a portion of our time, service and money for Christ's work on earth through his Church.

The Christian Stewardship program of Church support is an opportunity to respond to Christ's love by perpetuating our Church's mission. Stewardship places the responsibility to support the Church exactly where it belongs, on us.

Who will my Stewardship commitment include?

The Stewardship Commitment includes husband and wife for married couples and single adults as Stewards. Our Sunday school students will continue to make their our Stewardship Offering each Sunday. Family members over 18 years of age, who are employed, should make their own Stewardship Commitment.

2007-2008 Adult Education Speaker's Series

Orthodoxy in the 21st Century

January 20:  “Making Up is Hard to Do:” The Reconciliation of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad and the Moscow Patriarchate,” Andrew Walsh, Ph.D.

After a century of bitter division caused by the Communist Revolution in Russia and the Cold War, the Church of Russia and the “Synod Abroad” officially reunited in May after several years of fascinating negotiations. How was this breach healed and what are the implications for the larger Orthodox world? Andrew Walsh is associate director of the Leonard E. Greenberg Center for the Study of Religion in Public Life at Trinity College. A historian of religion in America and of the Orthodox Church, he holds degrees from Trinity, Yale Divinity School and Harvard University.

February 17:  “The Place of the Saints in Contemporary Orthodox Life,” James Skedros, Th.D.

Professor Skedros holds the Michael G. and Anastassia Cantonis Chair of Byzantine Studies at Hellenic College in Brookline, Massachusetts. He holds degrees from the University of Utah, Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Theological School, and Harvard Divinity School, including a Th.D. from Harvard Divinity School. Much of his scholarly work has focused on the role of the saints in Orthodox life.

March 9: “Religious Freedom for Minorities in Turkey: the Ecumenical Patriarchate under Kemalist and Islamist Governments,” Elizabeth Prodromou, Ph.D.

Professor Prodromou is assistant professor of international relations at Boston University and a research associate at the university’s Institute on Culture, Religion, and World Affairs. She holds degrees from Tufts University and a doctorate in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and has served since 2004 as a commissioner on the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom. She is a specialist in comparative politics and on church-state relations in Southeast Europe, including Greece and Turkey.

Thank You!

George Johns, George Bonatsakis, Manny Kalogiannis, Tony Calibey and Eugene Vardoulakis for their help at the Cathedral….Sandy Calibey for straightening and maintaining all the books in the pews – and Christina Peterson who continues to deep clean the walls in the hallway and other areas of the Cathedral…and assist with filing updates and purging of old files in storage…

The kitchen was scrubbed and cleaned by Maria Artas and Ellie Mermegas – they also cleaned and polished artifacts in the altar – thank you – they also bake koulouria for sale the beginning of each month – all proceeds benefiting our Cathedral.

Also, for assistance in the office:  Stella Emmanuel and Priscilla Kokinis.

Special thanks to Lonni Doros and his assistant, Ken, for all their efforts, and his donation of time and materials for the rental property and church interior.

We are grateful to Angelos and Peggy Giannakopoulos for their kind donation of new folding doors for the shelves in classroom #8 – and also to Angelos for installing them.

SERVICE OF THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY AND LIFEGIVING, CROSS

Special thanks to Yota Kyparides for preparing the tray with Cross & basil, to Estelle Kriticos for the beautiful floral cross in memory of her mother, Mary Tsisibis, and to everyone who brought in beautiful basil from their gardens to share in celebration of this beautiful and special day of our Orthodox faith.

To:  The Parish Council of St. George Cathedral

The month-long project of clearing out “dead” files and organizing the permanent records of the church has been completed.

My thanks to the following:

George Johns – for his help in moving the large boxes located in the basement, and other places for relocating the new storage boxes and for his support and sense of humor…

George Bonatsakis – for his help in providing me with the various cleaning products and for sharing the ladder…

Elaine Melonopoulos– for her patience in answering my many questions and for typing my various reports…

Without their help I could not have accomplished the task of locating, sorting, and purging the many file boxes which have been stored for years, and establishing a standardization of Banker’s Storage Boxes, all clearly marked withy more permanent computer generated labels.

In sorting these records, there are gaps of time, therefore, I feel that located somewhere in the church there may be additional “lost” boxes.  Should these ever be located, I would gladly resume this project.

Christina A. Peterson
