Christopher Augustinos
St. George honored the two young men who won this year’s National St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, held on June 11 at the Church of the Annunciation in Houston, Texas.
Eric Mantziaris, a sophomore at Wethersfield High School and the son of Marilyn and Chris Mantziaris, won the senior division of the contest.
Christopher Augustinos, an eighth grader at Smith Middle School in Glastonbury and the son of Angie and Ted Augustinos, won in the junior division.
Congratulations to both and to their families. Eis Anotera!
Both young men delivered their excellent talks after the Divine Liturgy on Sunday to an appreciative audience. Their speeches are attached for those who would like to read them.
Fr. George also thanked Christina Khalif for organizing the St. George competition, noting that the cathedral’s contest has produced many excellent speakers who have gone on to do well in the regional, archdiocesan direct district and national competitions. Dr. James Rouman, who has emerged as a uniquely successful coach and mentor for St. George’s participants in the Oratorical Festival, was also thanked. He traveled to Houston to watch the national competition. In church on Sunday he insisted that all the credit to the contestants themselves.
